A Digital Marketing Audit Every Business Owner Should Run

Running a digital marketing audit doesn't need to eat up a whole afternoon or require a marketing degree. We run audits like this for businesses across the Miami Valley on a regular basis, and the same handful of problems keep showing up. An outdated Google Business Profile. A contact form that's been silently broken for months. An email list nobody has opened since it was set up. None of these are hard to fix once someone actually looks. That's really the whole point of an audit. It's less about finding something new and more about noticing what's been sitting broken in plain sight.

Overview

A digital marketing audit is a check of every marketing tool your business uses, including your website, SEO, Google Business Profile, social media, email marketing, and online directory listings. It tells you what's working and what's quietly costing you customers, and it usually takes about an hour when you work through it in one sitting.

Start With Your Website

Your website is the first place most customers land, so it's the first place to check. Open your site on your phone and on a laptop and confirm it loads fast and looks right on both. Click through your main pages and look for broken links or outdated information. Fill out your own contact form and confirm you get the notification, including checking your spam folder. Check your domain and hosting renewal dates too, since an expired domain is one of the most common reasons a website goes down without warning, usually because the renewal notice went to an inbox nobody checks anymore.

If any of this turns up problems bigger than a quick fix, our web design team can take a look and tell you what's worth fixing versus rebuilding.

Check Your SEO Basics

SEO isn't something you set once and forget. Search rankings shift, competitors add content, and Google changes how it ranks pages. Search your business name and your main services and see what actually comes up. Check your page titles and meta descriptions to make sure they describe the page and include the terms your customers search for. A surprising number of the sites we review still have the default title and description that came with their website template, which does nothing to tell Google or a customer what the page is about. If you have a Google Search Console account, look for pages that dropped in rankings or stopped getting clicks. While you're at it, confirm your site has an updated sitemap submitted to Google.

We handle full SEO services for clients who'd rather not track all of this themselves, including keyword research, technical fixes, and ongoing reporting.

Review Your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile often shows up before your website does, especially on mobile searches and Google Maps. Confirm your listing is claimed and verified. Update your hours, phone number, and service area if anything has changed. Add a few recent photos and respond to any reviews you haven't answered yet. Check your Q&A section too, since it's an easy spot for outdated or missing answers to sit unnoticed. Listings with recent photos and answered reviews tend to get more calls than ones that just sit there with a logo and an address, even when the business itself is solid.

Google also publishes its own guidance on managing your listing through the Google Business Profile help center, which is worth bookmarking if you manage this yourself.

Look At Your Social Media Accounts

You don't need to be active on every platform, but the ones you're on need to be accurate. Make sure your usernames and passwords are documented somewhere your team can access. Check that your profile photo, cover image, and bio still match your current branding, and verify your hours, phone number, and website link are correct on every platform. Take a look at your last few posts too. If your most recent update is from a holiday two seasons ago, it's time for a refresh. A quiet account with correct information usually does less damage than an active one with the wrong phone number sitting in the bio.

Check Your Email Marketing

If you're sending newsletters or promotions, a few minutes of review can save you from bigger problems. Send yourself a test email and check how it looks on mobile. Confirm your unsubscribe link actually works, then review your open and click rates to see what's landing and what isn't. Clean out contacts who haven't opened anything in the last year or more while you're in there. A smaller list of people who actually read your emails will outperform a large one full of addresses that stopped paying attention years ago.

Email marketing comes with rules around consent and opt-outs. The FTC's CAN-SPAM guidance covers what's required if you're sending commercial email.

Confirm Your Online Directory Listings

Customers find businesses through more than Google. Directories including Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and industry-specific sites all matter too. Search your business name and confirm your listings are claimed. Check that your name, address, and phone number match exactly across every directory, since even small differences can confuse search engines and customers. The most common problem here isn't a missing listing, it's three or four versions of the same listing with slightly different phone numbers or old addresses left over from a move. Update any outdated photos or descriptions, and remove or correct duplicate listings if you find them.

Revisit Your Marketing Strategy

Once you've checked the individual pieces, step back and look at the whole picture. Does your current marketing actually match your business goals for this year? Are you tracking where your leads and customers come from? Is your budget going toward the channels that bring in results, or toward habit? The gap we see most often isn't a missing channel, it's a handful of channels running on their own without anyone checking whether they're pulling in the same direction.

If you find gaps here, that's usually the sign it's time for outside help rather than another round of guesswork. Our digital marketing services cover everything from strategy to execution, so you're not managing six different tools and vendors on your own.
